James John Kowalchuk, affectionately known as Jim, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at the Hospice of the Golden Isles. Born on November 18, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York, to Dimitry and Barbara Suchi Kowalchuk, Jim began a life marked by dedication to education and service to his community.

Jim was a respected and loved teacher, having earned a Master's in Education, where he made a difference in the lives of countless students. His commitment to his community didn’t end at the classroom. Jim volunteered much of his time to Habitat for Humanity, the Special Olympics, and VICA Skills (now SkillsUSA). As a Life Boy Scout, Jim instilled values of teamwork and resourcefulness in young people. He loved to share his passion for masonry and woodworking not only with his students, but with close friends and family.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Jim cherished being outside, whether hiking, canoeing, or simply looking out into a marsh filled with Spartina alterniflora. He was an avid player of racquetball, showcasing his competitive spirit even in leisure. He even carved intricate works of art with his hands. Above all, Jim valued quality time spent with his family engaging in activities that brought joy and laughter to their lives.
