Jerry Waters

Jerry Oran Waters, 76, passed away Tuesday, December 01, 2020 at the Griffin House under the care of Solace Hospice. Jerry was born February 15, 1944 to Oran and Lethera Kicklighter Waters. He was a 1962 graduate of Glennville High School where he was an outstanding quarterback and loved to play basketball. Jerry attended Brewton Parker College and graduated from Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1967. He then went on to graduate with his Master’s Degree in Guidance from South Carolina State and landed his first job with St. Andrew’s High School which later became Middleton High School. Jerry also coached, with many winning seasons and championships, at University South, USC Spartanburg, University of Georgia, McIntosh Academy, Pinewood Christian Academy and retired from Chapman High School in South Carolina. While at USCS he served as athletic director and an instructor in the school of education. Jerry was named the South Carolina College Coach of the Year and the Peach Belt Athletic Conference (NCAA Divison II) Coach of the Year in 1991 with the career record of 859-299, spending 47 years in coaching. Sports and coaching was Jerry’s life enjoying every relationship he built with his players throughout the years. He was a teacher of the game as he used it to teach his players life lessons and he always made them put academics first. Jerry led by example and will be remembered not only for his impressive coaching career but for the man and friend he was.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Jennifer Waters; son, Jason O. Waters and sister, Sandra Cobb.

He is survived by:

Son, Jeff Waters of Glennville, Georgia

Grandchildren, Casey Waters of Charleston, South Carolina
Jacob O. Waters
Joel R. Waters both of Virginia

Daughter-in-law, Sarah Waters of Virginia

Several other relatives also survive.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm, Friday, December 4, 2020 at Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00 pm at the chapel of Brannen-Kennedy Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Glennville City Cemetery.

Due to COVID-19, social distancing guidelines of six feet will be enforced.  Masks are not required but are highly recommended.
