Joann Spivey Jenkins, age 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 6, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., following a brief illness.
Born on June 24, 1932, at home in the Jones Community, Joann was the daughter of Frank and Eunice Jones Spivey and their only child.
She attended local schools including Tyson and Battle Creek School, later attending Reidsville High School, and graduated from Glennville High School on May 23, 1949, at just 16 years old.
Joann is lovingly survived by her daughter, Debbie Bernhard; granddaughter, DeAnne Ellis and husband Tim; great-grandson, Austin Pender and wife Taylor; great-great-grandson, Gavin Johnson, all of Southern Illinois.
And her great-granddaughter, Kristin Moseley and husband Justin; great-great-grandson, Davey Richard Moseley of Evansville, Indiana; along with numerous cousins, dear friends, and her beloved grand-dog, Theodore.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jenkins, and her son-in-law, Richard R. Bernhard and her lap dog and best friend Major.
During her years in Florida, Joann worked in the citrus industry and for Coca-Cola Foods (Minute Maid). In Georgia, she was a dedicated farmer who found great joy in gardening and tending to her flowers, especially her cherished daylilies. She also had a love for floral design and enjoyed working with Harry Spikes.
Joann loved spending time fishing in the family ponds, always hoping to catch a bass to bake and share with her mom and dad. She enjoyed attending fish frys at the tobacco barns and treasured family holiday gatherings at G'pa and G'ma Jones’ house.
She enjoyed retirement in Southern Illinois and was known as Mrs Jo to all her neighbors and friends.
Graveside services for Joann Spivey Jenkins will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at Glennville City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests with gratitude that memorials be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
