Mandell Dutton

August 14, 1938 — September 18, 2022

Mandell Jerry Dutton, passed peacefully during the early morning hours of September 18, 2022. Jerry was born August 14, 1938 to Mandell and Avis Bacon Dutton and has lived in Tattnall County all of his life. After the passing of his mother at an early age, Jerry spent his childhood under the loving care of his Papa and Big Mama (Mr. Bub and Mrs. Thelma Bacon.) These years shaped his life and resulted in his love of farming and his deep connection to his family and his roots.

Jerry was a 1956 Glennville High School graduate and attended Middle Georgia College. Upon his return from college, Jerry would spend the next several decades of his life farming as well as driving a bus for Tattnall County Schools and Pinewood Christian Academy. Jerry was a proud resident of the Gooseneck community and a lifetime member of Harmony United Methodist Church. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending his days hunting and fishing. His love of racing was fueled by his mechanical mind, always searching for creative ways to improve the speed of his driver. Jerry was also at home anywhere near a ball field, in his coaching shorts, preparing a lineup. His years as player and coach for Stanfield Timber softball were perhaps the years that brought him the most joy. They were the years that most of his stories were based upon and were certainly the reason that all of his children developed a life-long love of baseball. All of the activities that brought joy to Jerry’s life were made even sweeter by the fact that they were all centered around his children and his friends. Making precious memories was Jerry’s favorite past-time and he loved to recount the stories of those memories to anyone and everyone. In his later years, Jerry enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and supporting them in their activities. He was a well-known part of their lives and they are blessed for the gift of his many years with them.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Janet Dutton Pirkle and Libby Dutton Davis, and his wife of 26 years, Janet Dutton.
