Mary Sue Smiley

Mary Sue Smiley, 82, passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at her residence under the care of GHC Hospice surrounded by her family. She was born on May 10, 1944, in Reidsville, Georgia, to Clifford and Myrtle Boyette Cox and lived a life marked by style, warmth, and a spirited love for those around her.

A 1961 graduate of Glennville High School, Sue went on to build her working life as a cosmetologist and was employed at Belk’s. She brought a natural sense of beauty and presentation to all she did, and she was known as someone who was always well put together. Fashion was not simply something she enjoyed; it was part of the way she moved through the world, with confidence, charm, and unmistakable flair.

She will be remembered as fun, loving, spunky, and sassy—a true fashionista whose personality lit up the lives of family and friends. She loved shopping, hair, makeup, bowling, and fashion. She especially cherished her family and the joy of her large family gatherings. Her presence brought energy and sparkle, and the memories she created will remain a lasting comfort to those who knew and loved her.

She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Marie Cox Folker, John H. Cox, children, Lisa Anne Smiley, Derry Archie Smiley, Kristi "Suzi" Suzanne Smiley and husband, Ken Johnson

Left to cherish her memory are, her beloved grandchildren, Jamie Smiley (Brandi) and Charlie Smiley (Kaci); her K-9 companion, Bentley; great-grandchildren, Ian Rollins, Lexi Smiley, Charlie "Bubbie" Smiley; siblings, Martha Jo Durrence, Jimmy Cox (Cindy "1"), Jerry Cox (Jan), Jack Cox (Cindy "2"); numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at Beards Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. In honor of Mary Sue Smiley and the colorful life she loved the family has requested all in attendance to wear bright celebration colors. 

In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to GHC Hospice, 141 S. Macon St. Jesup, GA 31545 or a charity of one's choice.
