Our precious Maryann was delivered from the clutches of her cancer as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ came to take her home on Monday, April 14, 2025. Mary Ann Nelson Swain was born October 6th, 1955, to John and Patricia Nelson of Vermont, Illinois. She was a 1973 graduate of VIT High School and a 1977 graduate of Louisiana State University.
On August 3, 1975, she married Bill Swain of Denham Springs, Louisiana and made homes in Baton Rouge, Haynesville, Waterproof, and Iota, Louisiana before relocating to Reidsville, Georgia in 1988.
She had a 28 year career with the Georgia Department of Corrections working in various positions associated with business administration.
Regardless of where her home was, her church family was always an important part of her life. For the last 32 years that church family has been Pineview Baptist Church. She thoroughly enjoyed the years that she held babies in the nursery and loved working with all the wonderful ladies on the kitchen committee. She took great pleasure in ensuring the success of the Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes and the Sugar Time collection for the Baxley Children’s Home. She also used her professional skills to serve as the church treasurer for 13 years. Her greatest service to the Lord was the way she loved others.
Maryann enjoyed cross-stitching, cheering on her LSU tigers, and supporting her children and grandchildren in all their endeavors.
She was a loyal member of the General Josiah Tattnall Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as treasurer and Constitution Week chairman.
Maryann was a devoted wife to Bill for 50 years. She was a loving and dedicated mother to her son Matthew Swain and his wife Katherine of Reidsville, Georgia and daughter Mindy Swain Griffis and her husband Josh of Griffin, Georgia. She absolutely adored her six grandchildren: Ruth, David, Nathan, and Abigail Griffis and Micah and Harvey Swain. She made every effort to spoil them the best she could. She is also survived by her brother, Ed Nelson of Pekin, Illinois and his sons, Joel and John Nelson.
She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Kent Nelson.
