Melvin "Doc" Barker, Jr.



Metter- Mr. Melvin "Doc" Barker, Jr. 84, of Metter died Friday evening at his home, surrounded by his loving family, and the care of Gentiva Hospice of Savannah. "Doc" was a native of Blackwater, Virginia coming to Metter in 1981 from Texas. He enjoyed reading westerns, and baseball. He was of the Baptist faith attending New Life Baptist Church in Metter when able. He was retired from the United States Army as Sergeant 1st Class, having served both in the Korean War, and Vietnam War; and was 4 bronze star recipient, and also received a purple heart for combat wounds. After serving his country he became a welder by trade and was self employed for many years. He is preceded in death by his first wife Debbie Ruth Barker, daughter Wanda Barker Mitchell, and daughter in law Martha Higgins Barker. Also preceded in death are his parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister.



He is survived by his wife Susan Huggins Barker, of Metter; sons Randy (Renee) Barker, and Michael (Michelle) Barker all of Aline; and Brian (Donna) McKenzie of Alpine, Texas. Also surviving are daughters Elizabeth Louise (Moses) Gentry, of Swainsboro, Melissa (Jack) Burnsed of Pembroke, Jennifer (Dekle) Whealton, of Metter and Melanie McKenzie, of Stark, Florida; sister Carrie Fields, of Marion, North Carolina; brothers Marvin Barker of Marion North Carolina, William (Margaret)Barker, Asheville, North Carolina. 32 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren also survive.



The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice, and a special, special thanks to "Little Sister" Jennifer.



Visitation will be held Monday November 9, 2015 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Kennedy-Brannen Funeral Homes Metter Chapel.



Funeral Services will be conducted Tuesday November 10, 2015 11:00am at New Life Baptist Church in Metter with full military honors, Dr. Bill Vansant will be officiating.



Burial will be private.
