Robert Stephen Carney

Robert Stephen Carney, affectionately known as Bob, entered his eternal reward on May 5, 2026, at his residence under the compassionate care of Hospice Savannah, surrounded by his family. A man of deep faith and dedication, Bob leaves behind a legacy defined by service, commitment, and a passion for lifelong learning and community engagement.

Robert Stephen Carney was born August 9, 1943, in Columbia, South Carolina to George Marion and Iris Rebecca Booker Carney.  Bob's early life was marked by exceptional accomplishments in music and academics. A proud graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School, he was a member of the National Champion Band of 1961 and earned All-State High School Band honors in South Carolina that same year. Demonstrating leadership and academic success, he earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Management from Palmer College in 1966, where he served as student body president. He was vice president and was a cofounder of the Pi Beta Chi Social Fraternity. He furthered his studies at Armstrong State College, successfully obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with dual majors in Finance and Marketing Management in 1976.

His commitment to serving his country was equally notable. Bob was a United States Navy veteran, completing boot camp in Illinois, attending the U.S. Naval School of Music in Washington, DC for eleven months, and being stationed in Guam. His service exemplified discipline and dedication, traits that would characterize all aspects of his professional and personal life.

Professionally, Bob was a certified personnel consultant with the National Association of Personnel Consultants, earning this certification in 1970 while self-employed. His career was multifaceted: he worked as a marketing consultant for Coastal Electronics and West Connections, a contract transcriptionist for the FBI, and a technical recruiter through his ownership and operation of RS Carney & Associates. Additionally, he contributed to public service as an administrative assistant for the Chatham County Board of Elections. Throughout his various roles, Bob was valued for his meticulous organization, professionalism, and willingness to assist others.

Bob’s personality was marked by an organized, meticulous nature coupled with genuine kindness, a readiness to help and a little humor. His love for his Lord and Savior was the foundation of his life, reflected through his devoted study and rereading of the Bible, and active participation in compassion-driven activities. He was an active member of Compassion Christian Church in Savannah, where he contributed not only in fellowship and leadership but also through music. He was also fondly remembered for his tremendous ability to play the piano and the honor he held playing for the gospel quartet, The Lordsmen.

Bob was a man involved in his community. He took great pride in being involved in something bigger than himself and giving back. Bob was a member of many business and civic clubs, including, Solomon's Lodge No 1 F&AM of Savannah, A&A Scottish Rite of Freemasonry (32nd Degree), Alee Temple AAONMS of Savannah in all of which he held numerous positions of leadership. 

Among his many talents, hobbies and interests, Bob was an avid collector. His unique collections included coins, walking canes, Avon steins, and flags—particularly those flown on significant occasions. He cherished his collection of “little things,” a captivating assortment of random items and pieces of things lost, reflecting his eye for detail and appreciation for the small wonders of life. Beyond collecting, he enjoyed playing chess and reading his daily devotions from his Bible. Known for a distinctive practice of tipping for service with two-dollar bills—and delighting in receiving such bills as gifts to pass on to others—Bob’s generosity and thoughtfulness were remembered fondly by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation for Bob will be held on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Compassion Christian Church East Campus, located at 9150 Old Montgomery Road in Savannah, Georgia. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. A graveside service and entombment will be held at 3:00 pm at Mendes Baptist Church Cemetery, 12740 GA-169, Glennville, Georgia, with Masonic Rites and Military Honors rendered by the United States Navy.

Bob Carney’s life was one of exemplary achievement, heartfelt service, and rich personal faith. He is fondly remembered for his unique collections, remarkable musical talent, and profound kindness. His legacy lives on through the impressions he made upon family, friends, colleagues, and his faith community.
