Romie Lloyd Kirkland, 91, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, at Memorial Health University Medical Center. Born on January 28, 1935, in Reidsville, Georgia, Romie lived a life marked by commitment to both his country and his community.
Romie distinguished himself early by serving in the United States Marine Corps for three years, followed by 24 years in the Georgia National Guard. His unwavering devotion to military service exemplified his profound sense of duty and patriotism.
Following his military career, Romie devoted 36 years to shaping young minds as a teacher and coach within the Tattnall County School System. His influence extended beyond the classroom and athletics, influencing others with wisdom and encouragement. Later, he continued his involvement in the community through his work at Quik-Cut in Claxton.
Romie was an active participant in numerous local organizations that reflected his interests and commitment to fellowship. He enjoyed being part of the Gideons International, Emmaus Club, American Legion, Daisy Men's Breakfast Club, Belleville Men's Breakfast Club, and the Evans County Wildlife Club. These associations not only enriched his life but also highlighted his dedication and community involvement.
Romie is preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Kirkland and Myrtle Waters Kirkland.
Romie is survived by his wife, Genevieve Kirkland of Claxton, GA; children, Karen Blocker (Joe) of Darien, GA, Kathy Rogers of Pooler, GA, Stephen Kirkland of Glennville, GA; stepchildren: Ronda Boatwright (Dennie) of Claxton, GA, Julie Blackburn (John Choquette) of St. Mary's, GA; grandchildren, Heather Dockery (Joshua), Joe "Joey" Blocker (Monet), Joshua Rogers, Lucas Rogers; step grandchildren, Misty Chancy (Ryan), Stephen Blackburn (Kim), Lee Jones, Brandon Blackburn (Brooke), Kaci Boatwright, Will Boatwright; great grandchildren, Raven Dockery, Wyatt Dockery; step great grandchildren, Serie Compton, Will Compton, Trent Compton, Charlotte Blackburn, Eddy Chancy, Glavin Blackburn, McKenzie Boatwright, Sydney Boatwright; and step great-great grandchild, Eliza Compton.
Visitation for Romie will begin at 12:30 PM, Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the Rock at Eastside Baptist Church. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 6, 2026, at The Rock at Eastside Baptist Church. Burial will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, June 8, 2026, at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gideons International at PO Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-0800.
