Theron Thompson

August 24, 1943 — June 26, 2021

Theron A. Thompson, 77, of Glennville, GA died Saturday evening, June 26, 2021. He was born August 24, 1943 in Tattnall County to Freddie and Inez Groover Thompson. On February 23, 1963, he married the most beautiful woman that he’d ever met, Kathleen Sands Thompson. Born and raised in the Gooseneck community, he was proud that he and Kathleen could raise their children, Jamie and Mandee on the land that he roamed as a boy. As proud of a father as he was, he was even more proud to be the Papa of his grandchildren, Brooke and Zach. They hung on his every word about stories of growing up in the good ole’ days before electricity, television, and telephones were common household items. Papa was Brooke’s first word, and he was Zach’s first hero. A love and bond was created that even death cannot break.

He was a graduate of the Glennville High School Class of 1961. He joined the workforce following high school and later served in the Army National Guard. Always fond of the great outdoors, he found his career at Union Camp beginning on a logging crew, moving up to being a supervisor, and then earned a position managing multiple logging crews. His favorite “office” was along the Georgia coastline where he could enjoy his lunch under a live oak, admiring the beauty of the bluffs and marsh watching the rivers flow to the sound. Not too long after Union Camp became International Paper, he retired and spent more time at home on the family farm.

Throughout his life, his love of family and the outdoors was evident. Whether it was tent camping at Lake Winfield Scott, visiting the Great Smoky Mountains, or traveling to Disney World, a trip was not a vacation if it did not include in-laws, cousins, and grandchildren. Sharing his love and knowledge of hunting and fishing, especially with his brothers-in-law, was a favorite pastime. During spring and summer, more days than not, you could find him fishing with his brothers-in-law, who were not only family but also his best friends.

He is survived by his loving wife Kathleen; son and daughter-in-law, Jamie and Teresa Thompson, all of Glennville; daughter and son-in-law, Mandee and Kris Varazo of Florence, SC; grandchildren Brooke and Zach Thompson; sister, Retha Godbee of Reidsville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Aubrey and Georgia Sands of Lyons; Larry and Patsy Davis of Richmond Hill; and Bobby and Pandy S. Folsom of Glennville; as well as several nieces and nephews.
